Second-fastest 50 free not enough for Blue Dolphins’ swimmer to advance

Mikey Monday swam his second-fastest 50 freestyle time ever Tuesday, but he was disappointed it wasn’t fast enough to make the event finals in the YMCA Nationals in Indianapolis.
The Saks grad swam 26.35 – second in his short career only to his 26.11 qualifying time – but was well behind the 24 swimmers who were headed to the finals later this evening. The 24th qualifier came in at 24.66.
“I knew what I had to get to make the finals, but I wasn’t anywhere near that today,” Monday said. “It was my second best time, but, to me, it’s not what I wanted at all.
“I’m just going to forget about today and look forward to the 100. That’s what I was looking forward to anyway. The 50 free I like, but it’s so short of an event if you make any sort of mistake it kills you.”
He has plenty of time to get over it. The 100 free is Friday. Just like today, he gets one shot to advance to the finals.
“When I swam at State I was disappointed and figured how to put it behind me,” he said. “At first, I was sad about (today’s result), but I’ve got the event I’m looking forward to Friday, so I’ll (focus on that).”
Blue Dolphins coach Brandy Sanders has no doubt Monday will rebound in his next race. She’s seen it before.
“I think he’ll bounce back 100 percent,” she said. “He knows what to expect and he’s going to go out and fight it with everything he has.”
