Top-seeded Gary Wigington and No. 8 Matt Rogers both won matches Friday, completing the opening round of the Buddy Moore Bracket in the Calhoun County Match Play Championship.
Wigington defeated No. 16 Jeff Borrelli 6 & 5, while Rogers eliminated No. 9 Scott Martin 2 & 1. Wigington and Rogers will meet in the second round. Both matches were played at Cane Creek Golf Course.
Wigington took control of his match by winning five straight early holes. He birdied No. 2, then won 3, 4, 5 and 6.
“Once I did that it was just trying to keep it in play and not do anything to make a bad mistake,” Wigington said. “I was just going hole by hole. They had to tell me it was 6 & 5.”
The Rogers-Martin match was tight throughout. Rogers held a 2-up lead at the turn, but Martin cut the deficit to one on the par-5 14th. Martin missed a short putt on 16 allowing Rogers to move ahead 2-up with two to play, then Rogers closed it out with a par on the next hole.
“We play a lot alike; I just made a few putts and he didn’t,” Rogers said. “He probably hit the ball better than I did, but I might’ve putted a little better. If his putter was working, we’d probably have gone extra holes.”
