Wellborn needed a victory in a big way Friday night and it got one — in a big way.
Kevin Mixon rushed for 106 yards and three touchdowns and the Panthers rolled up 335 yards on the ground as a team and crushed Pleasant Valley 61-7.
Landon Machristie and Javian Thomas each rushed for two touchdowns and Quandarious Moore returned an interception 65 yards for another score. Five ball carriers had at least 40 yards rushing for the Panthers (1-2, 1-1), who were 0-2 for the first time since coach Jeff Smith’s first season in 2009.
“We’ve had a tough road to start the season off,” Smith said. “We had a tough first game with Saks, but we improved a lot when we played Glencoe; had chances to win and didn’t.
“The big thing going into this game was getting improvement from the Glencoe game into this game. It wasn’t so much our opponent, it was making ourselves better. I felt like we did.
“The first of the season we were still juggling the lineup. When you keep changing starters in and out you’re not going to get better. We felt like we got them all set last week and we felt like it showed against Glencoe. This week they had another week together and hopefully it’s coming together.”
Dalton Bean rushed for 105 yards for the Raiders (1-2, 1-1).

CENTRE — Devin Harris ran for 205 yards and five touchdowns as the Wildcats ran their regular-season winning streak to 15 games. The other two runners in their Lethal Weapon III attack — Calvin Figueroa and Demetrius Powell combined for 177 yards.
The Wildcats (3-0, 2-0), ranked No. 3 in Class 4A, actually trailed the winless Warriors 3-0 early and 10-8 at halftime.
J.T. Hill filled in for injured Tyren Dupree at quarterback for Cherokee County and completed 12 of 24 passes for 78 yards and two touchdowns. He also was the Warriors’ leading rusher with 77 yards on 26 carries.

The Falcons continue to keep their opponents out of the end zone, delighting the Homecoming crowd with their third straight shutout of the season.
They are one of only two teams remaining in the AHSAA that has not allowed a point this season. Carver-Montgomery fell out of that group Friday night and Maplesville – another 1A team – plays at Keith Saturday.
The Falcons, 3-0 for the second time in three years, earned their first statewide ranking since October 2007 earlier this week. They are No. 8 in the Class 1A poll.
They held Shades Mountain Christian to one first down, minus-53 yards net rushing on 22 carries and minus-29 yards of net total offense. Reaves Nelson scored a touchdown on a fumble recovery and Axis Heathcock was credited with a safety. Parker Morgan had 13 tackles and Sam Garner had seven.
Offensively, Chandler Collins rushed for 132 yards on 25 carries and scored three touchdowns.

SARDIS CITY – Jacksonville celebrated its first statewide ranking in 15 years by scoring in all three phases and moving to 4-0 for the first time since 1999.
The Golden Eagles, who pulled down a No. 7 ranking in the Class 4A poll this week, fell behind 7-0, but didn’t stay there long. Sid Thurmond returned the kickoff following Sardis’ touchdown 79 yards to get the equalizer.
Nie’Dale Archie put them ahead for good with a safety and before the first half ended Quen Veasley hit Evan Shook on a 20-yard touchdown pass. The Golden Eagles closed the scoring in the third quarter on Tae Ackles’ 3-yard run.
Jacksonville didn’t have an enormous offensive night – it missed several opportunities in the red zone – but the Golden Eagles did enough to win and once again got a strong defensive effort. Savon Parker and Nick Gangwer had nine tackles apiece and Thurmond and Makyah Curry each had an interception.
“The thing we were most proud of was kind of the way we went into a pretty tough place to play and handled the adversity,” offensive coordinator Thomas Edwards said. “We had several points in the game where we could’ve allowed a situation to dictate how we were going to play and we did a good job of not letting that happen.”

CLANTON – Ty Webber scored on a 10-yard run in overtime and the defense knocked down a potential winning two-point conversion pass as the Yellow Jackets escaped a long night with a victory.
The start of the game was delayed two hours by weather and when it resumed the Yellow Jackets were still trying to get comfortable. They had two fumbles inside the 30, an interception in the end zone and two missed field goals. It was a scoreless half despite Oxford holding an 181-9 edge in total yards.
The Jackets finally broke through midway through the third quarter when Tre Gamble ran 63 yards for the game’s first touchdown. Thomas Rudolph kept the Tigers from trying game early in the fourth quarter with an interception in the end zone, but they eventually did tie it – and force overtime – on an 8-yard pass with 4:52 to play.
After Webber scored in overtime, the Yellow Jackets still had to hold. The Tigers scored on a 10-yard pass, but the Oxford defense was there to bat away the potential winning two-point conversion.
Gamble rushed for 114 yards on eight carries and caught 14 passes for 79 yards. Jacob Cook had 100 receiving yards on four catches. Webber was 20 of 33 for 190 yards and an interception.

JACKSONVILLE — Daylon Brackett rushed for 237 yards and four touchdowns and had an interception and fumble recovery to lead the Thunder to its first victory of the season.
Reed Murphy also rushed for 102 yards on 10 carries as JCA rolled up 405 yards on the ground.
Brackett, last year’s Class 1A All-State quarterback, broke off a 55-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage, then recovered a fumble on Coosa Christian’s first play of the game. That led to Kris Armprester’s 6-yard touchdown run.
Brackett scored on runs of 55, 16, 37 and 44 yards. He scored eight touchdowns against Coosa Christian last year.
Armprester also had two interceptions, one from the end zone he almost brought back all the way.

The Bulldogs had 381 of their 479 total yards on the ground to snap a four-game carrying over losing streak. In addition to Heard, Dobbins, Edward Montgomery and Jermaine Ackles all had more than 50 yards rushing. Miller caught four passes for 69 yards.
The shutout was Anniston’s first since blanking Fayette County in the third round of the 2011 playoffs. Hayden has yet to score a point this season.
