David Clark found a lot to like about Jacksonville’s latest volleyball victory.
Clark’s defending state champions turned up the intensity in an area match — as they usually do — found the wherewithal to finish a close game and won a match on the road, sweeping Saks 3-0 Tuesday night.
The game scores were 25-18, 25-19, 25-17.
“Area matches are always big matches for us,” Clark said. “We kind of look at everything else as practice until you play the area.
“We put a lot of emphasis on playing (those matches) well and I thought our ball control was pretty good tonight. I think we gave them some trouble with our blocks, especially early, and I think the difference was ball control.”
The Golden Eagles (11-4) jumped out to a big lead in the first game and led Game 3 pretty much all the way. Saks gave them fits in the middle game and led until just before 20.
“We finished (that game) strong, which is something we’re working on, finishing the last five or six points,” Clark said. “It pushed us to some extent. I’m glad we played well on the road in an area match.”
The match was a big measuring stick for Saks (12-4) and Wildcats coach Randy Law suggested the nerve got to his squad. They had only 12 kills in the match. Taylor Teague had four kills and six digs.
“They blocked everything we hit,” Law said. “We played fairly well at times and at times we didn’t. We were just inconsistent.”
Donoho 3, Ohatchee 1: The Falcons bounced back to win three straight tight games after losing the first game. The game scores were 17-25, 25-20, 26-24, 25-22. Jordan Ray had 18 digs, 13 assists and three kills. The second-ranked Falcons visit No. 1 Sacred Heart on Thursday.
