Josh Poole recovered nicely from a potential emotional meltdown to win the Pine Hill Country Club club championship in a playoff.
Poole birdied No. 18, the first hole of a sudden-death playoff, to defeat Dustin Travis for his fourth straight club title. Some misadventures in the greenside bunkers led him to take an 8 there on the final hole of regulation to drop into the playoff.
Both players shot 137 in regulation, with Travis posting a final-round 69. Travis made par on the playoff hole.
Doug Bragg shot 65-67—132 and won the Senior Division by 15 shots.
David Merrill had his second career hole-in-one during the final round. It is listed in the East Alabama Sports Today registry of holes-in-one.
STONEY BROOK CHAMP: Longtime TV weatherman Ted Klimasewski shot 73 to win Stoney Brook Golf Course’s club championship.
David Brown won the first flight (74), Jake Moore beat Rudy Simmons on the first extra hole to win the second flight (79), and Maurice Wildman won the third flight (84). Chloe Borders won the Ladies Club Championship.
In other Stoney Brook news, Zach Adams scored a hole-in-one on No. 4 Monday.
ACC CHAMP: Reigning Sunny King Classic champions Lance Evans and Ryan Howard won the Anniston Country Club Member-Member when they defeated Matt Hunter and Rob Davie 5 & 4. John Carrozza and Larkin Coker were the net winners (122).
MATCH PLAY: As further testament to the unpredictability of match play, there have been five different winners of the Calhoun County Match Play Championship in the five years of the event’s existence.
Andrew Brooks became the latest to hoist the winner’s trophy when he defeated Gary Wigington 1 up Thursday with a brilliant eagle on the 18th hole. The other champions have been Ott Chandler, Matt Rogers, Wigington and Gary Wilborn.
The top 16 players in the Calhoun County Golf Tour points standings qualify for the field. Wigington’s win in 2012 remains the only year the top seed has won it.
UPCOMING EVENTS: The Masters Games of Alabama has individual stroke play and two-man scramble events Monday and Tuesday, respectively, at Cider Ridge.
