Roundup: Falcons win big

Donoho gives up first points of season, but lights up scoreboard with school record

BONUS: Chart of all County schools’ points record

By East Alabama Sports Today

PELL CITY — All season long the Donoho defense has been dominating the headlines, but Friday night the Falcons’ offense got a chance to shine.

On a night when their defense gave up its first points of the season, the Falcons scored a school-record amount of points in a 79-6 rout of Victory Christian.

The Falcons, 6-0 overall, 4-0 in their region and ranked No. 5 in Class 1A, erupted for 445 yards and scored 11 touchdowns. Chandler Collins scored four touchdowns and passed for two others. Justin Foster scored three touchdowns, one on a kickoff return. Even the defense got in on the act by supplying a safety and touchdowns on fumble and interception returns.

Collins rushed for 203 yards on 17 carries and completed 4 of 6 passes for 77 yards.

The 79 points were the most Victory Christian (4-2, 2-2) had given up in a game in its history. In fact, four of the 13 current Calhoun County football-playing schools have recorded their single-game point records against the Lions – Donoho, Ohatchee, Pleasant Valley and Wellborn.

They were not, however, the most points scored in a game by a county team. Anniston (89) and Oxford (81) both have scored more, but both of those eruptions came before World War II. See the chart below.

The Falcons gave up their first points of the season with 4:35 left in the third quarter. A trick play and two broken tackles produced a 70-yard touchdown. The Falcons were so upset about the score, they blocked the extra point.

Benjamin Russell 40, Oxford 21

ALEXANDER CITY – Oxford outgained its hosts by more than 100 yards, but Benjamin Russell intercepted quarterback Ty Webber four times and scored three touchdowns on big plays.

The Yellow Jackets (3-4, 1-3) racked up 376 total yards, mostly on Webber’s 13-of-31 passing for 218, but the turnovers proved costly. Webber did throw touchdown passes to Jake Cook and Ryan Stovall.

The Wildcats’ (6-1, 2-1) big-play touchdowns came on a 65-yard pass to Quin Johnson, D.J. Jackson’s 80-yard kickoff return to open the second half and a 58-yard Tyre Gray run.

Oxford’s other touchdown came on Tre Gamble’s 1-yard run. Gamble rushed for 134 yards on 22 carries and caught two passes for 27 yards. Cook caught six passes for 72 yards.

The four losses are the most Oxford has had this early in a season since it went 3-4 in 2006. That team won its last three games to make the Class 6A playoffs.

GAYLESVILLE – Daylon Brackett rushed for 182 yards – half of it on a 91-yard touchdown run in the second quarter – and accounted for all five of his team’s touchdowns as the Thunder (3-3, 2-2) won its second game in a row.

Brackett ran for two scores and threw three touchdown passes to Kris Armprester. The runs covered 91 and 10 yards, the passes 14, 9 and 87. The senior quarterback was 10-of-20 for 205 yards passing. Armprester caught five passes for 168 yards.

The Trojans (0-6, 0-3) scored first on the final play of the first quarter. The game was tied twice in the second quarter before JCA took the lead for good on the final play of the half. Gaylesville has lost seven in a row going back to last season and has lost nine of its last 10 games.

WEAVER – Delo Forbes rushed for 155 yards, scored two touchdowns and intercepted two passes, and Tyrik Hall scored three touchdowns as the Bearcats (2-4, 2-2) snapped a two-game losing streak.

Forbes scored on runs of 5 and 34 yards, while Hall scored on runs of 1, 7 and 8 yards.

Ohatchee (1-5, 0-4) scored on the opening drive of the game on Austin Tucker’s 3-yard run, but missed the extra point. The Bearcats scored on their first possession, hit the extra point to take the lead, stopped the Indians and scored again to extend their lead.

“It was big because we’re a young team,” Weaver coach Daryl Hamby said of answering the opening score. “A lot of times it sets the tone and it has to give them more confidence.”

The win moved the Bearcats into a tie for fourth in Class 3A, Region 6.

“This is second half of the season for us, we are in control of our own destiny,” Hamby said.

Piedmont 48, Pleasant Valley 8

PIEDMONT – The 10th-ranked Bulldogs got back on the winning track in a big way.

After losing two straight games to state-ranked opponents, they racked up 409 yards of offense and scored the first 48 points of the game. Two of their touchdowns came on an 76-yard return of a blocked field goal and a 60-yard punt return.

Ethan Borders scored Pleasant Valley’s touchdown on a 47-yard run in the fourth quarter. Drew Lewiski was the leading rusher for the Raiders (1-5, 1-3) with 123 yards on 13 carries.

In winning, the Bulldogs (4-2, 3-1) avoided their first three-game losing streak since 2004.
