Haynie throws 4 TD passes, Elston scores 3 times in big first half
By East Alabama Sports Today
MUNFORD — Brett Haynie threw four first-half touchdown passes and kept two on the Q.T. as Munford roared to a big lead and swamped winless Holtville 67-7 Thursday night.
Haynie completed 8 of 9 passes for 166 yards. His four scoring strikes went for 59 and 8 yards to Q.T. Elston, 10 to Rocky Smith and 22 to Chris Chapman. Elston scored a third first-half touchdown on a 14-yard run. Smith also scored the first touchdown of the game on an 11-yard run.
The Lions (6-3, 4-2) led 48-0 at halftime on Senior Night. They scored on basically all of their possessions in the half. Their final possession came with one second left.
They had 313 total yards and held Holtville to 33. Their defense had two interceptions — one of which Cameron Turner returned for a touchdown — a fumble recovery and three sacks. Greg Oden returned an interception for a touchdown in the second half.
“We executed well offensively,” Lions coach Will Wagnon said. ”We did not have any turnovers, but had a couple of close calls and we have trouble with turnovers all year. … A lot of our guys played good tonight.”
Everyone had opportunities. Rocky Smith rushed for 61 yards on 11 carries and Charles Smith had five carries for 33 yards. Chapman caught three passes for 66 yards. Austin Stephens led the defense with 7 tackles, Khason Lackey had six and Avery Harris had four tackles and two sacks.
