OXFORD — The Pleasant Valley girls and second-year Ohatchee boys won team titles in the Calhoun County Cross Country Championship Tuesday, ending Oxford’s long-standing hold in both races.
“It was a special day,” Ohatchee coach Casey Howell said.
Zebadee Lunsford of Anniston caught Ohatchee favorite Jimmy Wilson in the final 300 yards to win the boys race. Girls favorite Rebecca Hearn of Jacksonville won
her race by a wide margin.
Lunsford’s winning time was 18:06.02. Hearn won in 20:24.60.
Pleasant Valley has state championship cross-country trophies in its display case, but no County Championship trophy and coach Brad Hood found something odd about that.
The Lady Raiders took care of that by putting three runners in the top 10 and five in the top 20. They scored 53 points and edged Oxford by 15 points.
Ohatchee’s boys placed four runners in the top 10, scored 43 points and edged Pleasant Valley by five.
