Thunder beats Waterloo in non-region game, but gains spot via tiebreaker
By East Alabama Sports Today
JACKSONVILLE – Quarterback Daylon Brackett accounted for 449 yards of offense and five touchdowns to lead Jacksonville Christian 48-7 non-region victory over winless Waterloo that gave the Thunder lots of reason to celebrate.
By virtue of other things that went on around its region Friday, the Thunder clinched its second AHSAA playoff spot in school history.
The Thunder (4-5), which completed its region schedule last week, secured the fourth spot out in Class 1A Region 7 by virtue of its head-to-head win over Gaylesville on Oct. 3. Its only other playoff appearance came in 2010.
“This says so much for this football team,” JCA coach Tommy Miller said. “We had 20 kids dress out tonight, three seventh-grade lineman play a lot. We’ve lost three running backs that we started with due to injuries and have moved linemen to the backfield we don’t have.
“We’re extremely happy about getting in. We’ll have to travel a long way, but it’s just such an accomplishment to get in. We’re very happy.”
Brackett had another monster game. The reigning Class 1A all-state quarterback rushed for 259 yards and three touchdowns on 11 carries and completed 9 of 13 passes for 190 yards and two touchdowns to Kris Armprester.
His touchdown runs covers 77, 6 and 77 yards, and his touchdown passes covered 43 and 33 yards. He now has rushed for 1,372 yards and 18 touchdowns while throwing for 1,362 yards and 14 scores.
“Daylon played a great game; that went a long way,” Miller said. “What do you say? He would break it went we were back there, it seemed like, third-and-a-mile. I don’t know what to say about him. The folks from Waterloo, they couldn’t say enough. I talked to them after the game and they were amazed. I hope he gets the opportunity he deserves in college.”
Armprester had four catches for 94 yards. Walker Messer had three catches for 66 yards and returned an interception 96 yards without scoring.
