Playoff time is considered by most to be a new season, but followers of undefeated Donoho found Friday night’s playoff opener to be more of the same — a high-scoring offense and a shutout defense.
The fourth-ranked Falcons had their way with Decatur Heritage at Lentz Field, rolling to a 65-0 victory in the opening round of the Class 1A playoffs. Because of the way the bracket works the Falcons (11-0) travel to Marion County (6-5) for Round 2.
“I think we got off to a slow start, getting a few penalties, but once we got going, I was pleased with the offensive effort, and the defense played well pretty much the whole game,” Falcons coach Shannon Felder said. “Overall, I was pleased with our effort.”
Chandler Collins threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score as the Donoho offense rolled up 503 total yards. The defense held Decatur Heritage to only 52 yards and forced six turnovers in posting its school-record-tying eighth shutout. It even scored two touchdowns and a safety.
The scoring started with a 26-yard screen pass to Garrett Steed and a 2-yard rushing touchdown by Justin Foster for a 14-0 first-quarter lead. Steed also had a 64-yard touchdown catch in the second quarter.
“The line did a great job up front so I had a lot of holes to run through,” Steed said. “I couldn’t have done it without the other 10 guys on the field.”
The Falcons proceeded to score 28 points in the second quarter for a 42-0 halftime lead. Parker Morgan had a pick-six in the quarter and returned a fumble for a touchdown in the third quarter.
“Sixty five-0, domination, I expected us to do this, and I’m looking forward to next week,” Falcons assistant coach Jeremy Satcher said.
Buddy Ray, the junior varsity starting quarterback, led eight Donoho ball-carriers with 77 yards rushing. Foster had 73 yards and freshman Tej Patel had 67. All three ran for touchdowns.
“I think we worked really hard during our preparation for this week and I am looking forward to next week,” Foster said.
