LEEDS – Munford was hoping to have better luck against Leeds the second time around and keep its dream for a state championship alive, but in the end the Green Wave just had too much.

Leeds looked every bit like it was ready to take another state title, dominating the Lions in every phase in a 62-0 rout Friday in the third round of the Class 4A playoffs.

Leeds (12-1) had 502 total yards – 427 coming on the ground – and 24 first downs. All-state running back Tre Nation had 106 yards and three touchdowns.

Munford, meanwhile, ended up with just 38 yards of offense, 36 coming on the one pass completion to C.J. Chapman in the first quarter. The Lions (10-3) had only three first downs were held to minus-2 yards net rushing on 23 carries. They had only six plays over three yards all night.

The Lions got some offense going on Chapman’s long pass reception and a 15-yard penalty tacked on after the play, It got Munford was inside the 15, but the Green Wave defense shut down the threat.

Leeds erupted for 38 points from the final minute of the first half through the first seven minutes of the third quarter to turn the game into a rout.

The Lions looked as if they were slowing down the Green Wave, but the momentum totally shifted when Coston nailed a 38-yard field goal with 1:12 to go in the half to make it 20-0. The ensuing kickoff hit a Munford player, Leeds recovered and the Green Wave followed it by scoring with 21 seconds left on a 35-yard Tad Marshall touchdown pass to Koi Freeman.

Leeds scored four touchdowns in the first seven minutes of the second half on runs of 37, 4, 4 and 35 yards; Nation scored on two of those runs. Tyler Rose closed out the scoring with a 3-yard run early in the fourth quarter.

This was the second year in a row Munford made it to the third round of the playoffs — and this was supposed to be a rebuilding year.
