J’ville pulls away from Saks

Girls roundup: Oxford, Anniston, Piedmont, White Plains all earn victories

By East Alabama Sports Today

JACKSONVILLE – Jacksonville expected a tough game from Saks, but when it got to the fourth quarter things were a little too close for comfort.

So when it came time to make a move, the Golden Eagles made a big one, showing why they are one of the top teams in the state.

Third-ranked Jacksonville scored 15 straight points late in the fourth quarter to pull away from a close game and win 72-55 to move closer to clinching home-court advantage in the upcoming area tournament.

“We got a lot of motivation from what they were saying (in the media) so that kept us going and helped us finish the game off,” Golden Eagles guard Angel Kidd said. “Their players said they were going to beat us by 30 and the coach said they were going to give us a run for our money, basically beat us, so it gave us a lot of motivation.”

Jacksonville led by 13 with less than three minutes left in the third quarter, but Saks rallied to make it a four-point game with 3:26 to play. The Golden Eagles (16-2) then went on a 15-0 run over the next 2:26 to put the game away.

Sierra Stone got it started with two inside buckets and when Dasia Kirksey scored the next two, the home side could start breathing a sigh of relief.

“We have a lot of energy and we feel when we step it up we give more and more of it,” Kidd said. “We didn’t let up and let them get to us.”

Kidd led all scorers with 29 points. She also had eight rebounds, six assists and four steals. Stone enjoyed her third double-double in five games, going for 14 points and 16 rebounds. Kirksey also scored 14 points and grabbed nine rebounds.

Miracle Denard served notice the Wildcats meant business when she knocked down two early 3-pointers. Jordan Briskey then stepped up to keep them in the game with her 22 points. She was 12 of 16 from the free throw line.

Oxford 50, Pell City 44

Tremeria Britt scored 12 of her 17 points in the second half, Winter Taylor scored nine of her 11 in the second half and they combined for 12 in the fourth quarter as Oxford improved to 2-0 in its area.

The game was tied at 31 after three quarters before Britt and Taylor took charge. Britt hit two 3-pointers in an 11-0 run that gave the Yellow Jackets (8-8) control of the game. Ebony Kelley had 11 points and 10 rebounds for the Jackets, who have won seven of their last 10.

Anniston 56, St. Clair County 18

ODENVILLE – Miajah Bullock outscored her hosts and Raven Cooley nearly did as the Lady Bulldogs cruised.

Bullock had 25 points, while Cooley had 16. Kiyana Bullock and Carsheuna Curry both grabbed 10 rebounds.

Piedmont 45, Weaver 22

PIEDMONT – Carlie Flowers scored all nine of her points in the first quarter to get Piedmont started and Bre Green scattered her 22 throughout the game.

White Plains 41, Cleburne County 33

HEFLIN – Hannah Barno continued her recent run of solid play, hitting four 3-pointers among her 14 points to keep White Plains in the hunt for a high area tournament seed.

Barno hit a 3-point in each quarter. Carley Wood had 10 points and Amber Greenwood had eight.

Appalachian 38, Faith Christian 37

The Lions rallied from nine down to get close and had chances to win it late but couldn’t get their shots to fall.

They were at the free throw line with a chance to tie in the final minute, but made only one of their two free throws. They did get a steal in the final possession, but it came with less than one second on the clock and their last shot missed the mark.

Madison Stephens led the Lions with 11 points, but didn’t score until the fourth quarter. Logan Boyd added nine.

Spring Garden 60, Cedar Bluff 39

CEDAR BLUFF – Tykeah Rogers led three players in double figures and seven scorers overall with 20 points as Spring Garden reached the 20-win plateau.

Madison Sides added 14 points and Payton McGinnis had 12 for the fourth-ranked Lady Panthers (20-2). Lexi Moten had 17 for Cedar Bluff (10-7).
