Boys roundup: Gilbert’s leadership in huddle a key moment; also includes JCA, Jax, Talladega
By East Alabama Sports Today
WEAVER – The biggest play of White Plains’ 65-61 victory over Weaver Tuesday night did not take place inside the lines.
It may have set up a big play between the lines, but the most significant moment of the game took place in a time out. The Wildcats were leading by one with 29 seconds left and as the coaches were going over strategy in the huddle senior captain Nathan Gilbert reminded his teammates to be aware of a particular screen the Bearcats like to run.
Sure enough, when the teams returned to the floor, Weaver ran the play and White Plains was ready. The Wildcats forced their hosts to pick up their dribble and create a turnover.
It led to Weaver committing an intentional foul, off which Jerod Guthrie hit one of two free throws to extend the lead. The Bearcats had to foul on the ensuing inbounds play and Michael McGuirk made two more free throws sealing the game.
“People who give reminders after the fact are complainers; people who give them beforehand are leaders,” White Plains coach Chris Randall said. “On nights when the ball’s not going in the hole or going your way, your defense and leadership and teamwork has got to pull you through. That captain, a senior, was doing exactly what he was supposed to do – giving reminders to his teammates before the play.
“We’ve got a real nice record, but folks don’t realize how young we are. Nathan is the only one who has played big minutes before this season; these other guys are pups. We hadn’t been in a lot of these kinds of games; to win one like this on the road gives us a lot of confidence.”
In addition to his leadership, Gilbert also led the Wildcats’ offense with 21 points, 13 in the second half to bring his team back from a six-point halftime deficit. Guthrie had 18, including three 3-pointers in the third quarter to keep them in it. McGuirk had 13 and Murphy Doss added 10.
The Bearcats, meanwhile, spread their scoring among eight players. Delo Forbes and Paul Hubbard led the way with 13 each.
“You’ve got to tip your hat to them; they played great,” Randall said. “They executed their offense tonight as good as I’ve ever seen it. Their half-court offense beat our half-court defense.”
Jacksonville Christian 72, Gaylesville 27
GAYLESVILLE – Daylon Brackett recorded a double-double with 27 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Thunder. Reed Murphy had 16 points and seven steals, while Walker Messer had 12 points, nine steals and seven assists.
Gadsden City 83, Jacksonville 64
GADSDEN – Shon McKinney led three scorers in double figures with 16 points and Gadsden City scored 27 points off 29 Jacksonville turnovers. The Titans had 24 steals among those turnovers. Cam Horton led Jacksonville 21 points.
Talladega 65, Clay Central 50
TALLADEGA – Josh Madden scored 23 points and Jay Smoot scored eight of his 10 in a big second quarter as the Tigers rallied from an early deficit.
Talladega trailed 17-14 after one quarter before Smoot and his teammates came to life with a 20-point second. Desmond Green scored six of his 10 points in the quarter.
Madden, who joined Talladega’s 1,000-point club Saturday, did most of his damage in the second half as the Tigers pulled away. He scored 15 in the second half and went 10-of-11 from the foul line in the game. D’Angelo Scales and Mario Echols combined for 10 steals.
