Pin in final match gives Alexandria win over Saks
By East Alabama Sports Today
Daniel Longoria pinned his opponent at 220 to give the Alexandria wrestling team a 42-30 victory over Saks and complete a sweep of its tri-match Thursday. The Valley Cubs beat Ranburne 39-33 in their other match.
Had Longoria fallen, the Valley Cubs would have been tied in the Saks match, but they still would have been declared the winners via a tiebreaker.
“He’s making great improvement in just the last two weeks,” Alexandria coach Frank Hartzog said of Longoria.
Cubs senior Ty Brown also picked up a pin wrestling down at 140.
“He looked the best he has all season,” Hartzog said. “He was very focused.”
Against Ranburne, the Cubs lost only two bouts on the mat and even one of those was beneficial to their victory. Anthony Knop lost a one-point decision, but by avoiding a pin it saved the Cubs three valuable points.
