Anniston scored the first 20 points of the game in less than four minutes and swamped Lincoln 72-10 Friday night in its final game before the Calhoun County Tournament.
While the offense was impressive, the Bulldogs (17-5) are all about defense and they’ve been downright stingy in their past few games.
They held the Lady Bears to single digits in all four quarters and scoreless in a fourth quarter with a running clock. In fact, they have now gone 17 consecutive quarters and overtime holding opponents to less than 10 points.
“That’s been a goal of ours,” Anniston coach Eddie Bullock said. “This is going to sound crazy but I’m not concerned if we don’t win the County Tournament.
“I’m concerned we play consistent defense because that’s what’ll get you through the sub-state. When you get in the County Tournament emotion can change a lot of things and I don’t want them to get caught up in emotion.”
How active was their defense? Five players had at least three steals. Davia Palmer had 11, while Miajah Bullock, Raven Cooley, Carlina Welch all had four. Palmer also had eight assists. J’Kyra Clemson grabbed nine rebounds.
Miajah Bullock keyed the Bulldogs’ fast start scoring 12 of her game-high 23 points in the 20-0 run that opened the game.
“The last three games before the last my game has been kind of inconsistent and I try to stay consistent with my game,” she said. “That felt good.”
Eddie Bullock said she was going to be a key piece for the Bulldogs going forward. Thursday night against Parker she had 16 points, but was 4-of-7 from the free throw line.
“She actually the best penetrator we’ve got, make a move, get to the basket, so whenever she gets off we really, really do well,” he said. “We’re trying to get her acclimated to it because she’s still kind of the baby on the team so we try to break her in.”
