JACKSONVILLE — Tremeria Britt’s 10-point outburst in the fourth quarter helped the Oxford hold off a furious second-half comeback and beat Piedmont 42-33 Tuesday night in the quarterfinals of the Calhoun County Girls Basketball Tournament.

The Yellow Jackets (11-9) advance to face top-seeded Jacksonville (18-3) in the semifinals at Pete Mathews Coliseum 4 p.m. Friday.

Oxford used an overpowering inside game to open up a 22-7 halftime lead. Jordan Smith had six points and six rebounds in the opening half.

”We did not take the ball inside enough and were committing too many turnovers in that first half,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “We had to come out in the second half and go at the basket.”

And they did, coming out strong and picking up their defense with a full-court press that gave the Lady Jackets problems. The Bulldogs (16-9) chopped the lead to seven at one point and then Oxford’s Britt buried two long 3s to push the lead back to 13.

Bre Green tried to bring the Bulldogs back as she hit four 3s to cut the lead to 38-33. But Winter Taylor put the dagger in the comeback with a steal on a cross court pass and a layup to make 40-33 with 2:00 minutes to go in the game.

Taylor led Oxford with 14 points and Britt had 10. Taylor also had five assists and seven steals. Piedmont’s Green led all scorers with 19 points, 16 in the second half.

“It was a struggle for us in that second half,” Oxford coach Tonya Peoples said. “We had a 15-point halftime lead and then we had a ton of turnovers and missed shots. But you’ve got to give Piedmont credit — they have got a very good team and made a run at us.”

The Bulldogs have struggled with stability with senior Riesha Thompson out of the lineup. They had won nine in a row before she got hurt, but have gone 5-8 since she’s been sidelined.
