Golden Eagles highest among six county teams in final poll
By East Alabama Sports Today
The Jacksonville girls basketball team goes into postseason play as the highest ranked Calhoun County team in the statewide poll.
The Golden Eagles (19-4) pulled down a No. 2 ranking in Class 4A in the final statewide prep poll that was released for online publication Wednesday night. Deshler (25-2) is No. 1.
“All that matters is what you are ranked on Feb. 27,” Jacksonville coach Ryan Chambless said.
Jacksonville was one of two Calhoun County girls teams, and six overall, in the final poll.
Anniston, which edged the Golden Eagles in the Calhoun County Tournament final but has lost two games ranked opponents since, is ranked No. 6 in Class 5A.
On the boys side, Alexandria moved back into the top 10 in 5A despite losing in the Calhoun County Tournament title game to 1A Sacred Heart. The Valley Cubs are No. 10.
Sacred Heart is No. 4 in 1A.
Saks and White Plains are Nos. 3 and 7, respectively, in 4A. Saks is just behind Cherokee County, which was displaced at No. 1 by Cordova.
