Green, Steger lead locals into state

Piedmont runner, Ohatchee thrower ranked No. 1 in Class 1A-3A

Piedmont runner Karri Green and Ohatchee thrower Joria Steger carry No. 1 rankings in Class 1A-3A into this weekend’s State Indoor Track & Field Championships.

All told, Calhoun County athletes have 80 qualifying spots for the event at Birmingham’s Crossplex, but an athlete can only compete in four events and a school can have no more than two athletes in any one event.

Green is ranked No. 1 in the 1A-3A girls 400 (59.82) and the 60 hurdles (9.23); she is second in the 60 (8.17). Steger is No. 1 in the shot put (30-11).

Piedmont coach Mark Mitchell projects Green will win her three individual events without much fanfare.

“She doesn’t do a whole lot of celebrating,” Mitchell said. “She’s one of those who goes about her business very quietly. You’re not going to know she’s around until she runs and then you notice her really quickly.”

Calhoun County athletes have a total of 28 top 10 rankings in their respective classifications.
