Girls roundup: J’ville dominates; 5 other county teams fall in subregionals
By East Alabama Sports Today
JACKSONVILLE – Things couldn’t have started any better for Jacksonville in its Class 4A subregional game Monday night.
The Golden Eagles held Crossville scoreless in the first quarter and went on to claim a 72-32 victory that earned them a spot in the Northeast Regional.
The second-ranked Golden Eagles (24-4) will play Oneonta (24-6) in the regional semifinals at Jacksonville State noon Saturday.
Jacksonville was as dominant as the score indicated. They Golden Eagles outrebounded their visitors 42-21, forced them into 23 turnovers and outscored them 22-0 on points off turnovers and 16-0 on second-chance points.
They concentrated on defending Crossville guards Tatem Jones and Cassie McDaniel and held them to nine points apiece.
“I felt all in all we did a pretty good job,” Jacksonville coach Ryan Chambless said. “I wanted to make sure we were doing a really good job on their two best guards early and that’s what we did. I felt like we limited them. Of course, they were trying to hold the ball a little bit, too, and that contributed a little bit to it, but then we got on a little bit of a role, got a couple layups in our press and started o speed the game up.”
Angel Kidd led Jacksonville with 17 points; she also had five steals and five assists. Dasia Kirksey had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Virginia Poe had 12 points.
Fort Payne 65, Oxford 32
FORT PAYNE – Fourth-ranked Fort Payne forced Oxford into 17 first-quarter turnovers, held it off the board for the first three minutes of the game and opened a 27-7 lead from which the Yellow Jackets were unable to recover.
Fort Payne (29-3) now plays Clay-Chalkville in the Class 6A Northeast Regional semifinals at 9 a.m. Friday.
It was standing room only as the Wildcat faithful packed their way into the house Alabama lead singer Randy Owen helped build. There was no warm mountain music on this night for the Yellow Jackets as they fell behind 14-0 out of the gate and turned the ball over 34 times in the game.
The Jackets (11-15) found themselves down 45-14 at the half with just four field goals and 24 turnovers. A roaring crowd and student body located less than a foot off the court pressed in and added to the chaos as the young visitors were rattled despite two first quarter timeouts by coach Tonya Peoples.
Winter Taylor settled down for the Jackets and hit two 3s in a 10-point third quarter and ended up with a game-high 19 points. Khadaja Gardner led Fort Payne with 17 points
Glencoe 44, Piedmont 35
PIEDMONT – The Bulldogs jumped out to a double-digit lead in the first quarter, but couldn’t maintain it and fell one win short of making it to the Class 3A Northeast Regional.
Bre Green scored 17 points to lead Piedmont – running her career total to 1,027 – and Riesha Thompson had 12, but the Bulldogs (20-11) couldn’t maintain their edge.
“We came out and … did everything we could do right,” Piedmont coach Terrace Ridley said. “And then we just started making mental mistakes that hurt us. We let them work the boards too much and get too many second shots.
“It was going great. We couldn’t ask for a better first quarter, but things just fell apart when we didn’t need them to fall apart.”
Ashville 65, Pleasant Valley 41
ASHVILLE – A fast start – or slow one depending on your perspective – was the operative word for county teams in the subregionals Monday and Pleasant Valley got caught up in one.
The Raiders had trouble crossing midcourt early in the game, fell behind 22-6 and just couldn’t recover.
“I knew we were going to have to come out and shoot it ridiculously well and try to be aggressive with them (to have a chance),” PV coach Jeremy Wallace said. “They came out with a press and we had trouble getting down the court.”
The Raiders tried a matchup zone against Niki Moss, but the Ashville scorer still shook it for 18 of her game-high 26 points in the first half. Chatara Stoudmire added 12 and Hannah Ashley had 10.
Ashley scored eight and Moss nine in the first quarter.
Atleigh Brannon bounced back from a nasty fall in Friday’s area championship game to lead Pleasant Valley with 22 points. She scored all six of her team’s first-quarter points and 13 of its 15 in the first half. She scored more than 500 points for the season.
