Mother Nature has wreaked her own kind of damage on area golf courses this season with her barrage of bad weather and some amount of damage is to be expected.
But imagine the shock unsuspecting Cane Creek director Kenny Szuch experienced last week when he came upon the damage created by a utility crew looking to service a broken water/sewer line adjacent to the course property.
Szuch was riding the course with golf architect Bill Bergin for another project when he came upon turf and path damage in the area of the confluence of holes 4, 5 and 7. There were deep ruts in the turf and damage to the cart path where trucks attempted to reach the affected area somewhere in the woods left of the No. 5 fairway.
Courses workers last season just completed a restoration project on the No. 5 tee box and area around the No. 7 green.
According to the newsletter of the Cane Creek men’s golf association, Szuch has been in contact with the Anniston Water and Sewer Board, whose crews were dispatched to the course to effect repairs.
There were no immediate estimates of the cost of repairs, when they may be initiated or even if there was alternative access to the repair area that would have avoided the situation.
“All I can say is it’s unfortunate it happened and it will be repaired as soon as possible,” Szuch said.
PLAY WITH PATE: Ever wondered what it would be like to play a round and swap stories with a PGA Tour veteran and former U.S. Open champion?
Now you could have the chance to find out.
The sports memorabilia auction at the Anniston City Meeting Center to benefit Boys and Girls Clubs of East Central Alabama Feb. 28 is offering a chance for the successful bidder to join two friends in a round at Anniston Country Club with Jerry Pate.
The playing date has to fit Pate’s schedule, but he will make dates available.
Pate grew up playing Anniston CC before his family moved out of the area.
Other sports items, including a Hall of Fame baseball autographed by John Smoltz, will be available for bidding.
The auction starts at 6 p.m. and includes a meal catered by Betty’s BBQ. Tickets are $20.
For tickets and other information call the Boys & Girls Club at 256-236-7050.
COUNTY TWO-MAN: Registration forms are now available for the Calhoun County Two-Man Championship. They can be secured at the Cane Creek Golf Course pro shop. The tournament is scheduled for March 14-15. The 2014 Calhoun County Player of the Year and County Golf Tour statistical champions will be recognized at a banquet that Saturday evening.
