UPDATED: Tournament officials will try again Tuesday; Faith soccer pair set to sign
By East Alabama Sports Today
Both games of the Calhoun County Baseball Tournament semifinals scheduled for today at Alexandria have been postponed because of inclement weather.
Alexandria and Piedmont were scheduled to play at 4:30 p.m., while top-seeded Oxford was scheduled to play White Plains at 7.
Tournament officials said they would try to play Tuesday with the same schedule. But the forecast isn’t expected to be any more favorable.
If they can’t get in the games Tuesday, Alexandria coach Andy Shaw said, the coaches would try to put something together later in the season.
“You always want to finish the County Tournament,” Shaw said. “It’s one of the few that have been done so successfully over the years.”
Ironically, Alexandria travels to Piedmont for a regularly scheduled game on Thursday, but that wouldn’t help the County Tournament gate.
NEW WEAPON: White Plains baseball coach Chad Hudson has a luxury he hasn’t before in his tenure with the Wildcats, and it could come in quite handy if the County Tournament ever resumes.
Kevin Carr is the Wildcats’ first left-handed pitcher in Hudson’s rotation. With Oxford’s lineup chock-full of left-handed hitters, Carr’s availability could be a great equalizer.
SIGN IN, PLEASE: Two Faith Christian soccer seniors will be signing scholarships Wednesday afternoon at the school.
Tyler Johnson, who is coming off a four-goal game, will sign with Division I Mercer. Josiah McDaniel will sign with Covenant College, where his father, Faith coach Eric McDaniel, played his college ball.
Both players had been committed to their choices for months.
SUCCESS DELAYED: Madison Williams will have to wait a little longer to post her first win as a high school golf coach. Williams’ first match as Donoho’s coach Monday ended in … a tie.
The Falcons played Alexandria, Williams’ alma mater, at Silver Lakes’ Short Course, and both teams scored 143. Jacob Lecroy was low man for Donoho (31), while Alexandria’s Austin Smith was overall low medalist (30).
