The Yankees and Red Sox it isn’t, but as far as private school rivalries go in Calhoun County, it’s no less intense.
The folks at Faith Christian will tell you there’s not a team in the county they want to beat worse than Donoho, and the feeling is mutual.
The rivalry’s first installment of the spring moved to the baseball diamond Friday and Donoho had the best of it, winning 8-1 in a game that was called after six innings for darkness.
“The players have told me a little bit about the rivalry,” new Donoho coach Steve Gendron said after his first-ever game with the Lions. “There’s been some history between these programs in the past. I think my players were a little bit more focused today because they were playing Faith, and I think it showed in the way that we played.”
The Falcons (2-2) scored two runs in third and fourth innings, then batted around to score four in the sixth.
Senior left-hander Brett Holmes pitched five solid innings on a chilly day. He gave up a run in the first inning, four hits, struck out six and pitched out of a bases-loaded, one-out jam in the fifth.
Garrett Steed and two hits and two RBIs and Jesse McWilliams reached base all four times he came to the plate.
“Today was a good day all around,” Gendron said.
Faith (0-2) took a 1-0 lead in the first on back-to-back two-out doubles by Jack Sills and Slade Owens.
