UPDATED: Oxford’s Miller, 2 relievers face three batters over minimum; Wellborn rallies in seventh
By East Alabama Sports Today
Oxford continued to show the depth of its pitching staff Friday as three pitchers combined for the Yellow Jackets’ second combined no-hitter this week in a 4-1 victory over Randolph County.
Dillen Miller, Trey Hopper and Austin Bolander faced three batters over the minimum in their gem.
How strong were they? Miller faced 10 batters and threw seven first-pitch strikes; he struck out four, including the side in order in the first. The Jackets had eight 3-2 counts and got outs seven times.
Miller helped his cause with a three-run double in the third inning. The Jackets added a single run in the fourth on Andy Hammond’s fielder’s choice.
The Jackets lost the shutout in the sixth on two walks and an error on a potential double-play grounder.
Their first no-hitter of the week was fashioned by Hammond and Jacob Sears last Saturday against Weaver in the Calhoun County Tournament.
Oxford plays three games Saturday – Elmore County (10 a.m.), Central-Phenix City (12:30 p.m.) and Clay Chalkville (5:30 p.m.). Central and Clay-Chalkville will play at 3 p.m.
Wellborn 5, Munford 4
Blake Hanson’s two-run single in the bottom of the seventh capped four consecutive hits that helped the Panthers rally to win their home opener.
Ethan Beadles pitched five strong innings to get early control of the game and the Panthers led 3-1 going into the seventh before Munford rallied to take the lead.
Jaylun Kelley and Landon Machristie rode home on Hanson’s game-winning hit.
