Lady Bears use big inning to take upper hand in area race
By East Alabama Sports Today
ALEXANDRIA — Lincoln erupted for nine runs in the sixth inning, capped by Victoria Mitchell’s two-run homer, to take down eighth-ranked Alexandria 9-6 and grab the upper hand in their area softball race.
The Lady Bears trailed 3-0 when they came to bat in the top of the sixth. They sent 12 batters to the plate in the inning. In addition to Mitchell’s homer, seventh-grade catcher Logan Hopson delivered a two-run single.
“We put bat on ball in that inning and it just got contagious,” Lincoln coach Rush Rutledge said. “We hit the ball hard and we hadn’t been hitting it, either. This was a big win for us, for the way we’ve been playing.”
The Bears (16-10-1) snapped a five-game losing streak with the victory and moved to 4-0 in their Class 5A area, one game ahead of the Lady Cubs. The teams meet again in Lincoln later this month.
The Lady Cubs (14-8-1) made it interesting in the seventh when they scored three on a dropped pop fly with the bases loaded, but coach Brian Hess was still left looking for answers after the game.
“We’re just a roller-coaster right now,” he said. “We’re not playing very consistent. We get to the fifth, sixth innings and just have a lack of focus. I’ll do everything I can to get that squared away.”
In another game involving county teams, Wellborn defeated Piedmont 8-2.
