Baseball: J’ville, Oxford sweep

Golden Eagles sweep Wellborn, Oxford sweeps Central-Phenix City; also, local playoff series

JACKSONVILLE – Josh Glass’ two-out single in the bottom of the seventh drove in the winning run as Jacksonville beat Wellborn 2-1 in the first game of a doubleheader between playoff-bound teams Saturday.
The Golden Eagles completed the sweep by winning the nightcap 11-3.
Matthew Frankum got Jacksonville’s winning rally started with a one-out walk. Nic Garmon entered as a courtesy runner and was promptly sacrificed to second by Kane Aaron. Sid Thurmond was hit by pitch and Glass followed with his game-winning hit.
Wellborn scored the game’s first run on a bases-loaded double play in the second inning. Jacksonville tied it in the fifth on Thurmond’s sacrifice fly.
Brandt Denham and Blake Hanson both had two hits in the game for Wellborn.
In the nightcap, the Golden Eagles broke open a close game with a nine-run fifth inning. They sent 12 batters to the plate in the big inning. Colton Clark had an RBI double in the inning and three other runs scored on wild pitches or passed balls.
Colton went 2-for-3 in the game and Austin Lackey went 3-for-4. Denham had two hits and two RBIs for the Panthers.

COLUMBUS, Ga. – Jake Cook pitched nine strong innings in the opener and Dillen Miller threw a shutout and drove in two runs in the nightcap as Oxford swept a doubleheader from the seventh-ranked 7A Red Devils at Golden Park.
The bottom of the lineup produced two runs with two outs in the tenth to win the opener. Andy Hammond and Cook, the Nos. 8 and 9 hitters in the order, delivered RBI singles.
Cook, Hammond and leadoff man Chance Adams all had two hits in the game.
Nate Lloyd’s two-run single highlighted a four-run sixth that gave the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 lead. They were one out away from a win, but Evan Baber’s two-run RBI single in the seventh tied the game.
Cook gave up only four hits in his outing and struck out five, while Lloyd pitched the tenth for the save. Cook threw 128 pitches, 77 for strikes.
In the second game, Miller faced only five batters over the minimum. He had a no-hitter through three innings and and struck out five.
He helped his cause by driving home the first run in a two-run first inning; Jacob Sears followed with an RBI double. Miller’s infield out brought home an insurance run in the seventh.
Adams, Austin Bolander and Sears all had two hits in the game.
