Alexandria, Cleburne County both split, play today

PLEASANT GROVE – Justin Whitley turned in another powerful playoff performance, throwing a five-inning three-hit shutout Friday to earn Alexandria a split of its Class 5A series doubleheader.
Whitley and the Cubs won the nightcap 10-0 after dropping the opener 4-2. The teams will play the deciding game Saturday at 2 p.m., with the winner advancing to play Russellville.
Cleburne County also split its Class 4A doubleheader with visiting Oneonta. The homesteading Tigers won the nightcap 6-2 after dropping the opener 5-2.
In Alexandria’s opener, Pleasant Grove (31-16) scored a run in the second, two in the third and one in the sixth. The Valley Cubs scored a run in the third and the seventh, but left the bases loaded in the final inning.
Dalton Cobb tripled and scored Alexandria’s first run and drove in its second.
In the nightcap, Whitley struck out five and walked one. He entered the game with a 0.76 ERA for the season, allowing only five earned runs.
The Cubs (32-5) got a lot of offense and jumped out front with five runs in the second inning.
Dakota Kelley went 2-for-3 with a two-run triple. Cobb and Dodd also had two hits apiece.
