CENTRE — Byron Reed and past champion Chad Calvert both shot 6-under-par 65s Saturday to seize the opening-round lead in the Dub Ellis Invitational at Cherokee County Country Club.
They hold a two-shot lead over Dawson Garrett. Three others – defending champion Jeremy McGatha, Billy Mack Garrett and Brady Garrett – are another shot back.
Ten players are within four shots of the lead.
Calvert won the title in 2012. That year he shot an opening-round 70, followed it with a 65 Sunday and won in a playoff.
The highlight of his round Saturday was back-to-back eagles on 6 and 7. He made his only bogey on 13, then finished with birdies at 14, 16 and 18.
“Other than that (13), I was never in trouble,” he said.
Reed also had two eagles in his round. He chipped in on the par-4 10th and eagled the par-5 14th after hitting his approach to a foot. He had three birdies on the front, a fourth at 16 and two bogeys.
“I just never got really lucky on the greens before, but this year … I kind of hit it in the right spots and got lucky chipping in,” he said. “It’s going to be tough for me to follow up a round like that. I haven’t been playing that great, but I kind of put it all together today. I hope I can do it again tomorrow.”
