Volunteers are putting the finishing touches on their efforts to spruce up Anniston Municipal Golf Course in advance of this weekend’s seventh annual Buddy Moore Charity Classic.
The 80-player field has been sold out for weeks. The tournament is played in honor of Buddy Moore, the longtime Hill pro and Calhoun County Sports Hall of Famer who died in 2011. The four tournament flights carry the names of his family members. Son Scott and granddaughter Ashley Bussey are in the field.
Over the past few weeks the course’s golf committee has been up on the Hill doing things like adding sand to the bunkers and applying mulch to landscaped areas.
“I think it’s awesome (what’s transpired),” longtime Hill player Byron Preston said. “It was going down and we were all playing other places and we all ended up back over here and saved this place.
“We felt our heart was here. We got back over here and all the things that needed doing we started doing. If it were a 6 or 7 before, now it’d be an 8 or 9. The greens look good. You’ll be impressed.”
The event raised approximately $15,000 last year for its local charities and has a goal this year of $10,000. The tournament committee will be accepting outside donations throughout the weekend as well as offering a cookout both days and other fundraising activities.
Jeremy McGatha and Matt Rogers are the two-time defending champions. They have won three of the previous six tournament titles.
