VALLEY – DeAngelo Dunn returned a blocked field goal 85 yards for a touchdown with 1:12 to play — just moments after Oxford got a break on another blocked field goal attempt and had a touchdown called back by a penalty – sending the Yellow Jackets to a 20-13 loss to Valley Friday night.

It was that kind of night for the Yellow Jackets (1-2). They lost four fumbles, were intercepted once and had 138 yards in penalties.

Even the blocked field goal Dunn turned into a touchdown was a second-chance opportunity. The Rams blocked Keaton Borrelli’s first attempt from 30 yards only to have it negated by a penalty, giving Borrelli another shot from five yards closer.

And just prior to that, the Jackets had Trey Franks’ 15-yard go-ahead touchdown run negated by a penalty.

Also in the last four minutes of a tied game, they drove to the 30 only to be beset by another penalty and had a pass intercepted in the end zone.

“We had a lot of chances,” Oxford coach Ryan Herring said. “We had a lot of adversity and we just weren’t able to overcome it.”

Their defense held the Rams to only 167 yards.

A fumble and fourth-down penalty led to Valley’s first touchdown, but the Jackets responded quickly to take the lead.

Brody Syer connected on a 30-yard pass to Hareem Averitte to tie the game and Franks put the Jackets ahead with a 10-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter.

Jacksonville 41, Crossville 7

CROSSVILLE — The Golden Eagles rushed for 337 yards and scored all six of their touchdowns on the ground.

Tae Ackles rushed for 169 yards and two touchdowns, while quarterback Quin Veasley rushed for 74 yards and three scores.

Ackles scored on runs of 6 and 1 yards in the first half and broke off a 55-yard run in the third quarter to set up another score. Veasley scored on runs of 37, 18 and 1 yards.

The game was tied after the first quarter before the Golden Eagles turned on the jets.

Freshman Sabrienne Stephens scored Jacksonville’s final touchdown on a 43-yard run with 1:19 to play.

Alexandria 36, Hayden 14

Keenan Woodruff and Jamal Tucker both rushed for two touchdowns and the Valley Cubs ran for 274 yards as they improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2007.

Woodruff rushed for 102 yards on 13 carries and scored on runs of 21 and 39 yards. Tucker rushed for 88 yards on six carries; he opened the scoring with a 57-yard burst and later in the half had a 17-yard scoring run.

The Cubs took a 36-0 lead into the fourth quarter and Hayden scored twice in the final four minutes to avoid the shutout.

Alexandria quarterback Luke Tucker finally threw a pass this week. He completed 3 of 7 passes for 63 yards.
