Trapp goes the extra miles

OXFORD — Lane Trapp won the boys race in the ninth annual Waffle House/Yellow Jackets Invitational Saturday at Oxford Lake but that didn’t necessarily mean his day was done.

Not even close.

There was a good chance the Alexandria senior had a few more miles to put behind him before putting up his running shoes for the day.

Trapp won the boys race in a time of 18:18.76, nearly seven seconds ahead of McEachern runnerup Justin Seymour, and was primed for more.

“He’s the hardest-working kid in the state of Alabama, and I’ll stand by that for the rest of my life,” Valley Cubs cross country coach Phillip Hartsfield said. “He’s an encourager. He runs hard every time he runs, he encourages everybody else to run, he goes and runs an event after he finishes. He is the total package.

“I hope everybody who coaches at some time in their life gets a chance to coach a kid like Lane.”

Trapp’s time didn’t quite get to the 17s he was looking for on this day, but it was seven seconds faster than he ran finishing third at the County Championship on this course last fall. And he didn’t need much time to catch his breath after leading the 158-runner field across the line.

He planned to run a three or four more miles once the Valley Cubs returned home, and it wouldn’t be the first time.

The Cubs had a run-a-thon to raise money for their program and Trapp put in 10 miles for that. Later in the day he ran – and won – a 5K Glow Run for the Alexandria basketball team.

“I just try to work harder than anybody,” Trapp said. “At practice my goal is to work harder than anybody, just work hard at everything I do. I just want to be the best at everything.

“You’ve got to practice like the best to be the best. I don’t want anybody to be working harder than me.”

Meanwhile, the Ohatchee boys seem to have picked up where they left off last year in winning this first race of the season. The Indians had their most successful season as a program last year, winning their first team title, winning the County Championship, finishing second in their Class 3A sectional and placing in the top 10 in the state.

They put four runners in the top 15 Saturday, led by freshman Blake Noah’s fourth-place finish. They appear so deep, ninth-grader Jimmy Wilson, last year’s County runnerup, was their third-fastest finisher.

“I hope it keeps them hungry (and) shows them how good they can be,” Indians coach Casey Howell said. “There are no expectations. With the success we had last year it’s going to be very hard to ever match it; it’s a completely different team and we trained a completely different way.”
