Fourth-ranked Opelika stymies Jackets at every turn, hands program historical loss
By East Alabama Sports Today
OPELIKA – There wasn’t a lot that went right for the Oxford Yellow Jackets in their game against the fourth-ranked team in their classification Friday night.
Opelika lived up to its No. 4 Class 6A ranking, stifling Oxford’s offense and pummeling the Yellow Jackets 55-0, handing the program its worst loss in 75 years.
The Bulldogs (5-0, 3-0) held Oxford to minus-22 yards rushing and 30 yards net offense.
It was the Jackets’ worst beating since a 59-0 loss to Anniston in 1940. It had been exactly six years since they had last been shutout – 28-0 by Gadsden City on Sept. 18, 2009.
Opelika scored on six of its seven possessions in the first half and opened a 38-0 lead. Quarterback Jacob Bentley threw for three touchdowns in the half and running back Josh Johnson ran for two. Bentley ran for a touchdown in the second half.
Bentley was 11 of 20 for 256 yards passing in the game.
Oxford quarterback Brody Syer was continually on the run. He completed eight of 27 passes, was intercepted once and sacked five times.
The Yellow Jackets (2-3, 1-2) crossed midfield only once and it wasn’t far – the Opelika 49.
