Games for active seniors celebrates 25th anniversary in the place it all started — Oxford
By East Alabama Sports Today
The 25th anniversary of the Masters Games of Alabama gets underway Monday with opening ceremonies at the Oxford Civic Center and a golf tournament at Cider Ridge Golf Club.
The games were founded in Oxford in 1990 and returned there last year for the first of this two-year cycle of games.
Active seniors from across the state will take part in such events as golf, swimming, bowling, 5K, softball toss, free-throw shooting, horseshoes and various table games.
Because the event travels regularly around the state, this year’s Games will probably be the last in Oxford for next several years.
The golf event that kicks off the Games’ competition is an individual stroke-play event Monday, followed by a two-man scramble Tuesday. Entries will be accepted for Monday’s golf tournament between 7 a.m. and the 8 a.m. start. Entry fee is $80 for the two events.
The opening ceremonies, with its parade of athletes, is scheduled for 3 p.m.
