Piedmont wins first region title since 2012 as Hayes throws 2 first-quarter TD passes, defense holds foe to negative rushing yardage

PIEDMONT — Taylor Hayes threw two touchdown passes in a 22-point first quarter and Piedmont’s defense held Westbrook Christian to minus-28 yards net rushing in a 39-7 victory Friday that gave the Bulldogs their 12th region title and first since 2012.
Hayes completed 12 of 21 passes in the game. His touchdown passes covered 16 yards to Will Mitchell to open the scoring and 6 yards to Bayley Blanchard.
The Bulldogs added a safety and Darnell Jackson’s 27-yard touchdown run before the quarter was over.
Their other scores came on a 3-yard Brett Akin run, a 5-yard run by Deonta Alexander and Easton Kirk’s 27-yard field goal.
Jackson rushed for 82 yards on four carries, while Hayes added 47 yards on five carries. Blanchard caught five passes for 73 yards and Mitchell caught three for 33.
The Piedmont defense held Westbrook Christian to 87 yards of net offense. The only first downs it allowed came on a pair of 56-yard passes in the first and fourth quarters.
The Bulldogs lost their shutout on a 1-yard run by Addison Ponder with 4:31 to play. It snapped their string of 12 consecutive scoreless quarters.
