MOODY — Alexandria got a region championship and coach Frank Tucker got the customary water-cooler shower.
The seventh-ranked Valley Cubs rushed for 403 yards and its defense returned all three of its interceptions for first-half touchdowns in a 56-14 rout of Moody that clinched the Class 5A Region 6 title, their first region crown since 2012.
“It’s a great win for our kids,” Tucker said.
Keenan Woodruff rushed for 114 yards, Jamal Tucker rushed for 108, both scored two touchdowns and Cain Heath returned two interceptions for touchdowns in the first half.
Boosted by a big opening kickoff, Moody opened the scoring in the first minute of the game, but the Valley Cubs scored the next three touchdowns of the quarter and the rout was on.
Woodruff scored on runs of 35 and 10 yards. Tucker scored on runs of 21 and 52 yards. Heath’s interception returns covered 33 and 53 yards. Quentin Bowie’s 18-yard interception return gave the Valley Cubs the lead for good.
“Those defensive touchdowns really helped us as our offense was struggling a bit in the first half,” Tucker said.
