By East Alabama Sports Today
PIEDMONT – Taylor Hayes rushed for 140 yards to go over the 1,000-yard mark for the season, Darnell Jackson ran for two touchdowns and the defense recorded another shutout as Piedmont blanked Lexington 34-0 Thursday in a first-round Class 3A playoff game at the Field of Champions.
The third-ranked Bulldogs (10-1) will host Oakman (8-3) next Friday in Round 2.
Jackson opened the scoring with an 8-yard touchdown run late in the first quarter. He had a 9-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter.
Hayes scored on a 1-yard run in the second quarter, Bayley Blanchard caught a 36-yard pass from Cardavian Myers in the third quarter and Wil Mitchell scored the Bulldogs’ final touchdown on an 11-yard run in the fourth quarter.
Hayes’ 140 yards rushing gave him 1,062 for the season. Jackson went over the 1,000-yard rushing mark last week and with 69 yards Thursday now has 1,083 yards for the season.
The shutout was Piedmont’s second in a row and fourth in its current six-game winning streak following its only loss of the season at Leeds. The Bulldogs held Lexington to only one completion and 143 yards of total offense. They had four takeaways.
Lexington did get inside Piedmont’s 25 in the fourth quarter, but a few plays later the Golden Bears (6-5) were back near midfield. It was the first time the Bears had been shut out since back-to-back games at the end of the 2013 season.
