Alexandria, Cherokee County both pick up playoff wins; Weaver, Glencoe suffer losses
By East Alabama Sports Today
The last thing Keenan Woodruff said before he walked out of the dressing room last Friday night was a warning to beware of the two-headed dragon in Alexandria’s backfield.
That dragon showed no sign of losing its fire Thursday night.
Woodruff and Jamal Tucker combined for 373 yards rushing and six touchdowns as the Valley Cubs rolled over West Point 41-21 in an opening-round Class 5A playoff game at Lou Scales Stadium.
The 10th-ranked Cubs (9-1) await the winner of tonight’s Madison County-Pleasant Grove game for its second-round matchup.
Tucker inflicted the most damage, going for 192 yards and five touchdowns on 18 carries. Woodruff rushed for 181 yards and the game’s first touchdown. Tucker scored on runs of 7, 17, 9, 60 and 27 yards.
“It feels good to help the team get the win,” Tucker said.
After Woodruff opened the scoring with a 5-yard touchdown run, West Point’s Cameron Moore returned the ensuing kickoff 92 yards to the Warriors (6-5) the lead. Tucker then scored the first of his touchdowns and the Cubs (9-1) never trailed again.
West Point managed only 35 yards of offense against the Valley Cubs in the first half, and most of that came on a 28-run by Kobe Smith in the final 10 seconds of it. Chase Smitherman keyed the defensive effort with two interceptions.
“Our defense was embarrassed last week (in a 65-49 win over Cherokee County) and they wanted to play well tonight – and they did,” Cubs coach Frank Tucker said.

HUNTSVILLE – Weaver went into its opening-round 3A playoff game against the No. 1 team in the state with a “shock the world” mindset and for the better part of two quarters was doing just that.
The Bearcats held a 21-14 lead, but then the three-time reigning state champion Mustangs tied it in the final minute of the first half and outscored their visitors 35-0 in the second.
Weaver (5-6) built its lead on an interception return by Craig Copeland and two touchdown runs by Dalton Hamby. Hamby rushed for 44 yards on five carries. He also threw for 93 yards.
“They were very competitive and really made some big plays,” Madison Academy coach Eric Cohu said.
It was a costly victory for the Mustangs (10-1) as they lost star running back Malik Miller and offensive lineman Austin Troxell to injuries in the first half.
“We’re very beat up,” Cohu said.
Kiki Matthews rushed for 103 yards, Jordan Garrett rushed for 85 yards and three touchdowns and quarterback Grayson Edgemon completed 7 of 11 passes for 148 yards and a score..
