3 County teams in the statewide basketball poll; 1A Cardinals only boys team
By East Alabama Sports Today
After annihilating the competition on its own level and picking up an historic win over another top-ranked team, defending Class 1A state champion Sacred Heart is No. 1 in the statewide high school basketball poll.
The Cardinals (7-4) own a victory over Class 7A No. 1 Spain Park and came close to beating No. 3 7A Gadsden City in their season opener. They will put their No. 1 ranking on display Saturday at JSU in the TV24 Holiday Showcase against Carrollton (Ga.).
They are the only Calhoun County team in the boys statewide poll, but not the only county team in the poll.
Jacksonville is ranked No. 5 in Class 4A girls and once-beaten Pleasant Valley is No. 6 in Class 3A girls. Both teams are under the direction of first-year coaches who share similar sentiments about the poll.
“I’m proud that our kids have caught the attention of other coaches and media to vote us sixth,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “We have a long way to go to compete with schools in that group. We need to focus on our area first. We have some great teams to compete with before we can entertain playing the schools on that list.”
“Doesn’t mean a whole lot this early in the season,” Jacksonville coach Tres Buzan said. “I’m proud of the work and effort the girls have put in so far (but) we still have a lot of games left to play.”
