Anniston’s DeQuan Ross says when he steps out and hits a 3-pointer he wants it to be a surprise.
It didn’t surprise his teammates Monday when the post player stepped into the left corner drained a 3 in the fourth quarter, but you should have seen the look on some of the White Plains players’ faces.
White Plains coach Chris Randall called it “a huge momentum basket.” It only capped the most significant run of the game and gave the Bulldogs a 10-point lead they carried to a 60-50 victory.
It was Ross’ third 3-pointer of the season; he airmailed an attempt earlier in the game. He also made one in the third quarter against Sylacauga and one in the fourth quarter against Parker.
He made a play three minutes earlier a little closer in that was even more significant.
White Plains had just made it a one-point game when Ross stole the ball in his forecourt and laid it in. It sparked an 11-2 run – capped by his 3-pointer – that gave the Bulldogs a 10-point lead with about three minutes to play.
Ross finished with 23 points. Tray Croft added 18 for the Bulldogs (7-1), who have won seven in a row.
Kevin Carr led White Plains with 18 points; he hit four 3-pointers. He scored eight straight points that gave the Wildcats (7-3) a 38-35 lead with three minutes left in the third quarter.
Michael McGuirk had 14 for the Wildcats, nine in the fourth quarter. Murphy Doss had 11, nine in the first half.
