Alexandria uses big second half to clinch area No. 2, looks for more; Cortez comes off bench to help Weaver, PV and Jacksonville score wins

By East Alabama Sports Today

LINCOLN – Alexandria clinched the No. 2 seed in Class 5A Area 12 Thursday night with a 58-24 victory over Lincoln.

The Lady Cubs did it with a big second half after a stern talking to by head coach Jordan Costner at the break.

The game was tied 16-all in the second quarter when the Lady Cubs went on a run to take a 25-14 lead at halftime. They spoiled Lincoln coach Shea Monroe’s 28th birthday, however, by outscoring the Lady Bears 28-4 in the second half, holding them to one field goal and scoreless in the fourth quarter.

“They got chewed out at halftime,” she said. “We played better defense in the second half and that put us in a position to push the points.”

The Lady Cubs (7-6) faced the same gauntlet as their boys, playing the other three teams in their area on three consecutive days. They went 2-1 in the stretch to solidify their position in the standings.

“We had a busy week, a tough week,” Costner said. “You can’t really practice when you have three games in a row like this, so I feel like we started out the very beginning of that game kind of playing to their level and then we picked it up in the second half and made a game out of it.”

No. 1 in the area isn’t out of the question. The Cubs would have to win Tuesday against Anniston, which thumped them by 33 Wednesday, and then – if they remain tied – hope to win a coin flip.

“Hopefully, we’ll learn from that mistake, play a little bit better defense and give them a better game next time,” Costner said.

Timberlyn Shurbutt scored 13 points in the second half for the Lady Cubs and led all scorers with 25. Amaz Carmichael scored 14 for Lincoln before fouling out.

The loss was Lincoln’s 14th in a row after the Lady Bears won their season opener.

Weaver 55, Sacred Heart 39: Caleigh Cortez wasn’t expected to play because of an ankle injury, but insisted on going into the game and didn’t disappoint.

Cortez scored all 15 of her points in the fourth quarter to help the Lady Bearcats pull away. Mariah Thompson also had 15 for Weaver. She did most of her damage early, scoring seven in the first quarter as the Lady Bearcats opened a 17-12 lead.

“Tonight was a solid win for us,” Weaver coach Gary Atchley said. “We are a little banged up, but we are moving forward and look to have a big game (Friday).”

The Lady Bearcats play Piedmont Friday looking for their first area victory.

Pleasant Valley 53, White Plains 43: Mikala Simpson scored 10 of her 18 points in the fourth quarter, including all seven of her free throws, as the Lady Raiders pulled away from a close game. PV was 13 of 16 from the line as a team in the fourth quarter. Mckinley Parris, meanwhile, did most of her damage in the first quarter, scoring eight of her 16 as PV opened a 13-10 lead.

White Plains’ Shelby Wood led all scorers with 19 points. Her sister Carley scored all 11 of her points in the second half.

Jacksonville 44, Piedmont 36: Dasia Kirksey scored 13 points and Kyra Williams had 11 points with five rebounds, six assists and five steals as the Golden Eagles rallied from a nine-point first-quarter deficit to win.

Piedmont’s Kaitlyn Ridley led all scorers with 18 points. Lulu Jackson had eight points and nine rebounds.
