Saks locks up No. 1 spot in its area, Faith Christian remains undefeated in its area and more

By East Alabama Sports Today

The Saks Lady Wildcats were able to mark through another line on this season’s checklist Friday night when it defeated White Plains 46-36 to all but assure itself the No. 1 seed in its area tournament.

With two area games remaining and having beaten Jacksonville twice, the Lady Wildcats (11-6, 4-0) can finish no worse than a tie for first in 4A Area 11 and own the key tiebreakers.

“It means a whole lot to be able to do that,” Saks coach Michelle Lively said. “I hope I clinched it. I’m thinking I did. I don’t want to say I did it and not.

“Hosting the area tournament notches off one of the check marks on the list. No. 1 on our board is to be able to compete and do what we do and have fun and play basketball.”

It wasn’t the prettiest game the Lady Wildcats have played – White Plains’ press caught them a little flat-footed at times — but they still had enough to get past their hosts.

Jordan Briskey led Saks with 14 points. White Plains’ Hannah Barno led all scorers with 15 points; she hit five 3-pointers.

“Tonight all we needed to do was win,” Lively said. “We made it a lot closer than it needed to be. I think we kind of gave White Plains a little bit more confidence than they probably needed, but that’s what happens when you play here. It’s always a going to be a fight. … It was ugly, but I’ll take it.”
