Lincoln withstands Wellborn’s barrage of 3s to win first game as ranked team in 15 years; White Plains, Donoho, Talladega win
By East Alabama Sports Today
Lincoln celebrated its first appearance in the statewide basketball poll in 15 years Thursday with a 68-57 victory over Wellborn.
But the Golden Bears, No. 9 in Class 5A, had to duck for cover with all the 3-pointers Wellborn rained down on them.
The Panthers made 10 3-pointers in the game and shot better than 70 percent from beyond the arc. Jordan Montgomery (22 points) and Blake Hanson (19) each hit four.
Lincoln’s L.J. Carmichael led all scorers with 23 points. Zay Caldwell had 17 points, including two 3-poiners.
Carmichael did most of his damage in the middle two quarters, where he scored 18 of his points; he two 3-pointers. Caldwell sealed it by going 6-for-8 from the line in the fourth quarter.
It was a seven-point game midway through the fourth quarter when Wellborn coach Jordan Angle got hit with a technical foul. The Golden Bears made the two associated free throws and pulled away.
“I apologized to them for getting the T; I took them out of it,” Angle said. “But they gave me high-fives after I got it.”
White Plains 71, Piedmont 51: Eli Hightower and Jerod Guthrie both started the game hot and the Wildcats rode them the rest of the night.
Piedmont had played several overtime or close games of late, but the Wildcats (17-5) made sure that wasn’t going to happen again by opening a 27-11 first-quarter lead. They got eight points from Guthrie and nine from Hightower in the flurry.
Hightower finished with 17 points and five 3-pointers, while Guthrie finished with 16.
Piedmont’s Easton Kirk nail a three-quarters court shot at the end of the third quarter to cut White Plains’ lead to 55-41. He had 18 points with five 3-pointers.
Each team hit eight shots from behind the arc.
Donoho 54, Munford 51: The Falcons tuned up for their big area game at Faith Christian tonight with a victory over the Lions.
Tucker Sedmak and Robert Clausen each scored 10 points as the Falcons opened an 11-point halftime lead and held on through a rough third quarter.
A victory over Faith tonight would inch the Falcons closer to No. 2 in their area and away from top-ranked Sacred Heart’s side of the area tournament bracket.
Talladega 64, Clay Central 46: In a game Wednesday, Ashton Duncan scored 18 points and Jay Smott had a double-double as the Tigers clinched the regular-season area title at Chuck Miller Arena.
Smoot had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Jamonte Twymon had 10 points and, as usual, Jae-lyn Russ and Robert Houston dominated the boards with 11 and nine rebounds, respectively.
Sand Rock 81, Gaylesville 28: Caylon Simpson led four Sand Rock scorers in double figures with 20 points in the opening round of the Cherokee County boys tournament. Joel Brock had 18, Bradon Carver added 16 and Jack Boyd finished with 13.
