This time there will be no coin toss as Oxford beats Chelsea to go 3-0 in area; includes other boys boxscores

OXFORD – Head coach Joel VanMeter walked briskly off the floor when the game ended Friday knowing one fact with absolute certainty.
“There will be no coin toss this year,” he said basking in the glow of his Yellow Jackets’ 61-46 victory over Chelsea at the Oxford Sports Arena.
He was referring, of course, to last year’s tie in area play with Chelsea and the final tiebreaker to determine who would host the area tournament. The Jackets won that coin toss last year created by an overtime loss at Chelsea.
This year, the Yellow Jackets (12-8, 3-0) took care of business right from the start. They jumped out to a 17-7 first quarter lead as Jakolbie McClendon pumped in seven of his 20 points to lead the way.
Oxford stretched the lead to 36-23 midway through the third quarter before the Hornets (5-15, 1-2) got hot behind the 3-point shooting of Joseph Lanzi and cut the lead to 41-37 entering the final quarter.
Sophomore forward Braden Jones scored 10 of the first 13 Oxford points in the quarter to help the Jackets blow the game open and complete the regular season sweep of Chelsea.
Jones led the Jackets with 22 points. Jalen Moore added 10 points. McClendon had 11 rebounds to go with his points.
“I am so proud of these kids; they just keep fighting and battling,” Van Meter said. “Jakolbie is just playing so well. He was playing like this in the summer and then after football it took a while for him to get that feel back.”
The Jackets are looking forward to the Calhoun County Tournament that starts today.
“This is one of the best tournaments around, with 15 county teams going at it with big crowds and all that intensity,” Van Meter said.
