Defending champions Nick Souder and Matt King stayed on track for a repeat at state wrestling championship

HUNTSVILLE — Defending state champions Nick Souder (Weaver) and Matt King (Oxford) stayed on track for a repeat Thursday as both advanced to the semifinals at the state wrestling championships.
In all, 12 Calhoun County wrestlers survived to compete in today’s semifinals at the VonBraun Center. The championship matches are Saturday.
Souder and Alexandria’s Lane Trapp stayed on track for a championship meeting at 113 in Class 1A-5A as did undefeated 170s Christian Knop (Alexandria) and Caleb Lauderdale (Dora). King is vying for the 6A title at 170.
Two of today’s semifinals are direct head-to-head encounters between county wrestlers.
Weaver’s Collin Allison and Wellborn’s Kane Pitts face off in a 182 semifinal, while Piedmont’s Jamie Crutcher and Ohatchee’s Caleb Montgomery face off in a 220 semifinal.
The other semifinalists are Piedmont’s Trey Snyder (160), Weaver’s Chase Rodgers (195) and Oxford’s Wesley Slick (6A 120) and Clay Webb (6A 285).
Weaver is currently fifth in the 1A-3A team standings with 46 points. Alexandria is ninth (32), Piedmont 14th (22), Ohatchee 20th (14.5) and Saks and Wellborn tied for 25th (11). Leeds leads with 74 points.
Oxford is seventh in the 6A race with 44.5 points. Arab leads with 89.5 points.
