County sends 6 into finals

HUNTSVILLE — Of all the epic battles that will take place for state wrestling championships Saturday, two of have been eagerly awaited all season.

Six Calhoun County wrestlers have made it into Class 1A-5A championship matches at the VonBraun Center.

Two of the more highly anticipated matchups that came to fruition Friday feature county rivals Nick Souder of Weaver (61-1) and Lane Trapp of Alexandria (33-5) at 113 and Alexandria freshman Christian Knop (55-0) and Dora senior Caleb Lauderdale (60-0) in a battle of undefeated 170-pounders.

Souder took a major decision from Tristan Watson of Holtville in his semifinal 19-9; Trapp edged Moody’s Will Patterson 8-7; and Knop decisions J.O. Johnson’s Shonderio Spralling 6-4.

Other county wrestlers making their way into title matches are Wellborn’s Kane Pitts (182), Weaver’s Chase Rodgers (195) and Ohatchee’s Caleb Montgomery (220).

Pitts (28-3) faces Alex Nickell of Leeds (41-3), Rodgers (63-5) faces Andy Baker of Tallassee (44-5) and Montgomery (52-5) faces Colton Parton of Madison County (42-1). Pitts decisioned Weaver’s Collin Allison in the semifinals 13-6, Rodgers decisioned Jackson Brown of Leeds 9-4, and Montgomery decisioned Jamie Crutcher of Piedmont 7-1.

Cleburne County’s Tyler Mayfield (13-1) made the 152-pound final coming back from a knee injury opposite Toren Pollard of Leeds (43-1).

In other matches of note Fultondale’s Macon Edwards is one match away from completing a record 90-0 championship season in the 1A-5A 106 final and double-amputee Hassan Hawthorne is one victory away from the 6A title at 145.
