HOOVER – Trey Hopper threw 64 pitches in a seven-inning complete-game victory and Nate Lloyd drove in three runs as the Oxford beat Oak Mountain 6-3 in the Buccaneer Classic Wednesday.

It was the Yellow Jackets’ second straight win after having their 20-game winning streak snapped the day before.

Hopper kept Oak Mountain scoreless for five innings, gave up six hits, walked none and struck out four. He threw 50 strikes, 20 on the first pitch.

Lloyd drove in three runs with a ground out in the first and a two-run double in the sixth that gave the Jackets a 6-0 lead. Brennan McCullough, Andy Hammond and Chance Adams drove in runs in the fourth.

Oak Mountain scored three in the sixth on RBI singles by John McDonald and Mason Williamson and Caleb Floyd’s run-scoring groundout.

The Jackets now move into the championship bracket as the No. 5 seed. They will play host Hoover Thursday at 9 a.m. in a rematch of Tuesday’s pool-play classic. The winner plays the Moody-Helena winner in the 11:15 semifinals. The championship game is 1 p.m.

Gulf Coast Classic

Baldwin County 2, Piedmont 1, 8 innings
Pell City 7, Piedmont 0

GULF SHORES – Piedmont put runners in scoring position in both games, but had trouble getting them home.

The Bulldogs left got a game-tying solo homer from Easton Kirk in the fourth inning of their opener, but left three runners in scoring position after the blast.

Baldwin County scored the game-winning run when Luke Smith lifted a sacrifice fly into center field with bases loaded in the eighth inning.

After the tough first game, the Bulldogs left four runners in scoring position, three at third base. Bayley Blanchard and Caleb Morrow each had two hits for Piedmont.

The Panthers, meanwhile, scored at least one run in each of the first five innings. Bailey Horton had hits in his first two at-bats, including a two-run single in the second inning, the last of four straight two-out hits in the inning.

Hendersonville 8, Alexandria 2

GULF SHORES – The Valley Cubs struggled at the plate and in the field.

Hendersonville took advantage of nine Alexandria errors and scored all its runs in the first four innings. Riley Shaw came in for the Cubs at that point and gave up one hit in three innings of shutout relief.

Brock Pressley and Shaw drove in the Valley Cubs’ runs in the fifth inning.
