Piedmont’s Williams no-hits Wellborn; Lincoln uses long ball to sweep St. Clair County
By East Alabama Sports Today
PIEDMONT — Kayleigh Williams allowed two bases runners in a five-inning no-hitter and Torre Roberts and Kenzie Key hit two-run homers as Piedmont blanked Wellborn 11-0 Wednesday.
Williams faced only 16 batters and struck out four. The only runners who reached against her came on a two-out walk in the second inning and a leadoff error in the fourth inning that was later erased on the base paths.
Roberts and Key hit their homers in the fifth inning to bring the game to a run-rule end.
Roberts and Williams both had three hits, while Key, Hannah Hulsizer and Madison Pike had two apiece.
The third-seeded Lady Bulldogs play second-seeded Alexandria Thursday night 6:30 p.m. in the Calhoun County Tournament at Oxford Lake.
Lincoln sweeps St. Clair County
LINCOLN – The Lady Bears clinched a share of their Class 5A Area 12 regular-season title by sweeping St. Clair County 10-0 and 14-3 behind five home runs and Rayanna Powell’s two-hit shutout in the opener.
The sweep left Lincoln and Alexandria tied atop their area standings. Since the teams split their regular-season series – each winning on the other’s field — it likely will come down to a coin flip to determine the host team for their three-team area tournament.
The tie could be broken, however, if the Lincoln and Alexandria were to meet during next week’s tournament at Southside. They are currently in opposite pools in the seven-team field.
“We did what we had to do,” Lincoln coach Rush Rutledge said. “It’s tough having to flip a coin over it, but it is what it is.”
The Lady Bears swept Wednesday’s twinbill with an awesome display of power. Kamryn Beasley hit two homers and drove in eight runs in the 14-3 game, Carlee Mullinax hit one in the 14-3 game and Taylor Houck hit one in each game. The team also hit five doubles and a triple.
The heart of their lineup – Mullinax, Beasley, Houck and Victoria Mitchell – was a combined 20 for 28 with 22 RBIs and 15 runs scored.
