Wigington, Cole shoot 7-under-par Sunday, win newest county championship by four shots

First-round leaders Gary Wigington and Ty Cole backed up their opening-round 60 with a bogey-free 7-under-par scamble Sunday to win the Calhoun County Four Ball/Scamble at Anniston Municipal Golf Course.

Because of the inclement weather that hit during the round, tournament organizers counted a teams’ first 14 completed holes regardless of where they started in the shotgun start.

Wigington and Cole won the newest tournament on the Calhoun County Golf Tour calendar by four shots over County Two-Man champions Cory Etter and Caleb Bowen. Etter and Bowen also shot 7-under and birdied their last four holes, matching Jeremy McGatha and Matt Rogers for the best run of consecutive birdies on the day.

McGatha and Rogers posted the day’s best round – 9-under – and went from worst to first in the Championship B flight. They played the back nine in 7-under.

Tim Steward and Daniel Black shot 5-under and won the first flight by five shots.

Andrew Brooks won the closest to the pin and longest drive contests in Sunday’s round.
