Anniston’s boys established themselves as the best boys team in their coach’s tenure, Pleasant Valley’s girls served notice as the team of the future and Piedmont’s Karri Green completed another golden sweep on the final day of the state championship track meets Saturday.

Anniston’s boys kept telling coach Lisa Howard they were going to be the best boys teams she’s ever had and they lived up to that by finishing tied for third in the 4A-7A State Championship Meet in Gulf Shores.

The Bulldogs scored 52 points and tied with Alabama Christian for third in Class 5A. They were 13 points behind winner St. Paul’s and 10 points behind runner-up Ramsay. This season they won the Calhoun County Meet, finished second in the sectionals and third at the state.

“I’ll take that all day,” Howard said. “We’d gotten to a point where we’d win an event here or there. Last year we just wanted a trophy, then came (this year’s) County and the sectionals. Losing at state by 13 points, we’ve come a long way.”

Among the highlights of Anniston’s final day were Jeremy McCants finishing fourth in the 100 and the 4×400 and 4×100 relays both finishing second to Ramsay. The 4×100 broke the school record.

In the 1A-3A Championship in Cullman, Pleasant Valley’s youthful girls team scored 45 points and finished seventh in Class 3A, five points behind sixth-place county rival Piedmont.

Rachel Faucett, who won her third straight high jump title Friday, helped the cause Saturday when she medaled for the first time in a running event with a third-place finish in the 800.

“I knew this year if we could just get in the mix, get the kids some confidence, show them where they need to be and how close they really are, I think next year they’re fired up and know we’re just that close,” PV coach Brad Hood said. “Half of my kids, this is their first year ever doing track so now they’re fired up and they know what it takes.

“I’ve got everybody back, plus there are going to be some more come out; it’s catching on. Next year could be a special year for us.”

Piedmont’s Green won three events Saturday – 100 hurdles (14.90), 200 (24.97) and 330 hurdles (46.04) – and set another record in the 200 to help the Lady Bulldogs finish sixth.

Green met her goal of winning four events and setting two records in the meet. She has 11 individual gold medals in the last three state outdoor meets and 16 in the last three indoor and outdoor meets combined.
