MONTGOMERY – Oxford and Ohatchee both suffered morning losses in their respective state tournament games Friday and will look to stave off elimination later today.
Oxford lost to area rival Chelsea 3-1 in the Class 6A winner’s bracket final, while Ohatchee lost in its Class 3A opener to Dale County 7-3.
The Lady Jackets now must win three games if they hope to win a state championship, and two of them will have to be over Chelsea in the championship series. Ohatchee faces a long road back for a shot at its state title Saturday.
Oxford will play the winner of the Cullman-Southside Gadsden game at 3 p.m. and Ohatchee will play Prattville Christian at 1:30.
Chelsea sophomore Sarah Cespedes had Oxford no-hit until the seventh inning. She had allowed only one base-runner to that point, and that came when she threw high to first on Taylor Ellison’s bunt leading off the fourth.
Kaylynn Garrett led off the seventh inning with a home run to give the Lady Jackets life and Haley Lyner followed with an infield single, but Cespedes got out of it with no further damage.
Ohatchee fell behind 4-0 after three innings in its game. The Lady Indians got a run in the fourth, but Dale County scored three in the bottom of the inning to break it open. Regan Snow hit a two-run homer for Ohatchee in the seventh inning.
