When you’re playing as well as Ty Cole is right now the breaks when they come just seem to fall your way.
Cole made birdie from a hazard early in his round Sunday, nearly made a hole-in-one on a par-4 on the front and rode that momentum to win the revived Gadsden Country Club Invitational.
The Asbury High history teacher shot a final-round 3-under-par 68 and finished at 9-under 204 for the tournament, six shots better than runner-up Clay Guerin of Birmingham. Chad Calvert of Boaz was third (214).
It was his second win in as many weeks, having won the Fort McClellan Credit Union Pro-Invitational on the Calhoun County Golf Tour last weekend. He heads to the Tour’s RTJ Silver Lakes Championship next weekend that he has won the last two years and feels “comfortable.”
The last player to win back-to-back events on the Calhoun County Tour was Gary Wigington in 2014 (Pine Hill Invitational, Calhoun County Championship).
“I’m hitting it good right now,” Cole said. “I’m going to ride it until it’s done.”
Cole carried a five-shot lead into the final round, then added another shot to it out of potential disaster on the par-5 third hole. He hit his tee shot into the hazard, took a drop and then hit a long 5-iron to two feet and made the putt for birdie.
“That kept some of the momentum from yesterday,” he said.
Later in the round, he hit a three-quarters driver on the uphill ninth that a maintenance worker positioned near the green said came within a half-inch of finding the hole. Cole made eagle – for the second day in a row – then played for par on the back nine and made nine in a row to bring it home.
“With Calvert being the closest and playing with me, it kind of had to be demoralizing for him,” Cole said of his birdie on 3. “He sees me hit it in the ditch and he he hits it perfect, then I hit it to two feet. He kind of looks at me like, ‘Can you not give us a break?’ I said, well, I did hit it in the ditch.”
Now he goes to an event he has won two years in a row. But even as well as he’s playing right now he’s not taking anything for granted.
“I’ve thought about Silver Lakes before this year started because I won it the last two years, and for whatever reason I tend to play pretty well there,” he said. “You’ve still got to go out and beat everyone else; they’re not going to hand it to you.
“When it comes to Silver Lakes, I feel comfortable there. Kind of like Cane Creek, I feel comfortable there and I hit it pretty good there.”
PARENT-CHILD: Club champion Garrett Burgess and Drennan Beam fashioned a final-round 4-under-par 66 and won the annual Parent-Child Tournament at Anniston Country Club by two shots.
The winners were 11-under 129 for the weekend.
“We have played in this tournament a few years now and have come close in the past, but we finally got it done so it’s nice to check it off the list,” Burgess said.
Defending champions T.J. and Jeremy McGatha finished tied for second with Randy and Logan Archer at 131. Tournament officials went to the third USGA tiebreaker to determine the places.
Don and Rusty Whitlow won the second gross flight. Rusty and Gantt Whitlow won the net division.
